About EW

The Emerging Writers Reading Series is returning with new hosts and a new location in fall 2017! Originally founded by Jess Taylor in 2012, the EW Reading Series has been on hiatus since June of 2016. Marcia Walker and Mahak Jain are reviving the reading series whose readers have gone on to win awards, place their work, publish books, and gain further recognition as the up-and-coming writers of Canada.

History

The Emerging Writers Reading Series was originally spearheaded by Jess Taylor, a young writer. With an abundance of friends and acquaintances interested in writing as a profession, Jess decided to start a reading series dedicated to the emerging (but professionally serious) writer. Every second Tuesday of the month, there was a reading with writers that had not yet been featured. Over time, the Emerging Writers organization grew to be a team of curators and organizers and past EW readers went on to win awards, place their work, publish books, and gain further recognition as the up-and-coming writers of Canada.

A fun place to hang out with other artistic minds, The EW Reading Series happened once a month at Duffy’s Tavern in the back stage area (1238 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario). The series was housed at this venue for four and a half years before eventually going on hiatus in June 2016.

The Emerging Writers Reading Series is grateful for the support of The Toronto Arts Council, who funded our 2014-2015 schedule. We are also grateful for the support of the Ontario Arts Council who funded our 2015 schedule and will continue to help fund our 2016 show schedule.

The EW Reading Series is now run by Mahak Jain and Marcia Walker who are relaunching the series in Fall 2017.
